Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker Review
The Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 is a 6-quart programmable pressure cooker with a wide range of features to help make cooking easier and quicker.
Today in our Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker review we’ll go over some of the features within the Instant Pot and let you know some of the things we liked about it and some of the things we didn’t.
If you’ve spent any time researching pressure cookers I’d be very surprised if you hadn’t heard about the Instant Pot brand. It is by far the best-selling pressure cooker brand in North America and has received a huge amount of attention in recent times, so much so that it has become almost cult-like.
Pressure cooking was once a thing feared by many but the invention of electric pressure cookers and specifically the rise in popularity of the Instant Pot has brought the world of pressure cooking to many more people around the world. Let’s have a closer look at what all the fuss is about and if the Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 pressure cooker stands up to closer inspection.
Functions & Features
The Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 gets its name from the 7 primary functions which it is designed to carry out. They are:
- Pressure cooker
- Sautéing and Browning
- Rice cooker
- Slow cooker
- Food re-warmer
- Yogurt maker
If you were to purchase the Instant Pot Duo you may never use all 7 functions (though you may use most of them frequently) but it’s great to know that you have the option to use them if you ever wanted to.
There are 14 ready-made presets on the appliance and it is simply a matter of loading the pressure cooker up with your food, spices, and water and pressing one of the 14 programmable options:
- Slow Cook
- Pressure cook
- Keep warm
We used almost all the presets in our tests and found them to work very well. We made a variety of soups and chili and they were delicious. They were so easy to make and with the push of a button we had a wonderful meal ready within 20 minutes. The first thing we cooked in the Instant Pot was this delicious Instant Pot Garlic & Brown Sugar Chicken recipe and it turned out amazing.
Instant Pot claim that recipes can be cooked up to 70% faster if cooked in an Instant Pot, we did not test this but the food was definitely cooked very fast. The great thing about the Instant Pot Duo is that it is consistent. You can cook the same thing over and over again and the results will also be good.
The programming interface is completely intuitive so you won’t need to micromanage those presets. You can simply load it, select how you want the items cooked, and leave it alone until it’s done. An unlisted, bonus feature of this product is that you can also use your Instant Pot Duo to prepare foods for canning. We didn’t test the canning capabilities so it would be unfair for us to talk about it in this review.
Another great feature is the timer control. Want the food cooked and ready to eat just as you walk in the door from work? Not a problem, just set the time and the appliance will start cooking at the time you tell it to. We tried this a number of times and found that it worked extremely well.
Instant Pot claim that recipes can be cooked up to 70% faster than traditional cooking methods.
Materials & Build - Will it last and how does it look?
The body of the Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 is well built and solid and the quality of it is there for all to see. The inner pot is made from stainless steel which is easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher as it is 100% dishwasher safe. The fact that stainless steel has been used to make the inner pot means that food tends not to stick when cooked. There are many pressure cookers on the market and a lot of them have very ugly interfaces but the Instant Pot does not have that issue. It looks classy and would not be an eyesore if you were to leave it on your kitchen countertop.
The buttons have a nice feel to them when pressed and the lid locks firmly and feels sturdy. All in all, there is never any doubt when it comes to the build of an Instant Pot.
It seems like the makers of the Instant Pot have tried to make this pressure cooker and the accessories it comes with as useful as possible. When you purchase an Instant Pot Duo, the box contains the following:
- Pressure cooker and inner pot
- Condensation collector
- Steaming rack
- Rice paddle
- Soup spoon (ladle)
- Measuring cup
- Recipe book
- User manual
- Plug and power cable
The Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 also has a smartphone app which you can load on your IOS or Android phone. This gives you access to 100’s of recipes to try out on your Instant Pot Duo. It gives you access to the Instant Pot Duo community, as well, so that you can get feedback and tips from other owners which will help you to really get the most out of your pressure cooker.
Overall, we found the Instant Pot Duo to be very good value for money. It delivered in all departments (just like Instant Pot normally do) and surpassed are expectations of a mid-range pressure cooker.
There is a lot to like about the Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 pressure cooker. As we expected, the build of the appliance is fantastic, it feels solid and well-made and everything about it has a nice feel to it, from the buttons to the way the lid locks in place. Some pressure cookers can feel cheap but the Instant Pot certainly doesn’t. What’s more is that the Instant Pot looks great and fits in well to any kitchen. The Instant Pot brand is now a house hold name and automatically a bit of respect when people see it. If you are into brand names then this is a great addition to any kitchen.
We loved the fact that there are 7 functions in the one appliance, all of which we feel will come in very handy for the majority of people who buy it. Some people might think that the pressure cooker in the main function and that Instant Pot have just thrown in 6 other functions as a gimmick, but that really isn’t the case. Each of the functions work just as well as any stand-alone appliance of that nature. For example, the Instant Pot Duo rice cooker function works fantastically as a rice cooker and comparable to any rice cooker on the market, as does the steamer and yogurt maker.
The panel is easy to use the presets make it very simple to use. We would recommend reading the manual when you get it as there is more to the appliance than just the presets but you could certainly get away with using the presets on a day to day basis.
We found the pressure cooker function to be fantastic and consistent. Each meal we cooked turned out great.
One down side is the fact that the timing in some of the recipes that come with the Instant Pot aren’t exactly accurate due to the fact that you do have to wait for the Instant Pot to get to the right pressure. This isn’t really a problem with the Instant Pot appliance, as all pressure cookers have to get up to the right pressure before they start cooking, it is more an issue with the cookbook instructions.
On the issue of recipes, the fact that the Instant Pot comes with access to an App which allows you to find recipes and join an Instant Pot community is fantastic. Another benefit of the Instant Pot being the most popular pressure cooker on the market is that many people have released cook books specifically for the Instant Pot. So if you want to broaden your recipe selection even further you can do so. Check out some of the fantastic Instant Pot recipe books on Amazon.
One of the things we felt could have been improved on with the Instant Pot Duo was the fact that the inner pot doesn’t have any handles, which makes handling it without silicone mittens or oven gloves impossible. As this pressure cooker is in the mid-price range, would we expect the inner pot to include handles? Probably not, but we are so used to the Instant Pot over delivering in other areas that maybe we just think it would be another nice touch (maybe we are just greedy as it certainly ins’t a big issue).
Would we be happy to recommend the Instant Pot Duo to anyone looking for a mid-range pressure cooker? Most certainly. It is a fantastic appliance made by the most popular pressure cooker brand in the world.
