A study by Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) found that cooking appliances like ovens account for 10% of your home’s electricity! Switching to an energy-efficient cooking device can make a big difference in your energy bill — and pressure cookers win, hands down.
For example, a pot will need 190 wh (watt hours) to bring 1.5 liters of water to a boil. If the bottom is uneven or slightly warped, which leads to heat loss, it will need 290 wh. However, a pressure cooker only needs 60 wh — less than 1/3 of the energy used to boil water on an electric stove.
Research by the Department of Energy Labs also found that pressure cookers are twice as more energy efficient than gas ranges. That’s because the gas also has to heat up the pot and the surrounding air, before it actually heats the food.
